Katie Winstanley, a former nurse, was shocked to learn that the same wax used for Brazilian waxing was applied to the delicate skin around the brows, an area ten times thinner. Witnessing burns and trauma dismissed as “normal skin lifting,” she became determined to find a safer, gentler alternative to use for her customers at her salon.

While in the UK nursing her father, Katie discovered threading—a natural, skin-friendly method used to achieve flawless safe results without harsh chemicals heat or tugging of the skin. While there She completed a threading diploma which inspired her to create New Definition Brows®—a concept that completely redefined brow care in NZ “I wanted a name that reflected not only the new technique but also how brows define your face and your personality,” Katie explains.

Launching this as a premium designer service was a bold move for a small town accustomed to $10 brow waxes. Katie even removed the doors from treatment rooms to establish New Zealand’s first open brow bars, normalizing brow treatments as a routine beauty service.

“It was so terrifying! I threw out the dirty wax pots, lost 90% of my $10 clients—and most of my income. But I wanted to offer something special, something people couldn’t find anywhere else.”

The success was immediate. Clients traveled from across the country for New Definition Brows®, a system combining expert brow mapping, precise color correction, threading, and advanced finishing techniques for beautifully balanced brows that last.

Katie’s innovation didn’t stop there. Her passion for improving industry standards led her to open the first Brow School in New Zealand, training therapists nationwide. Her dedication has transformed not only her salon but the way brows are shaped and cared for across the country, setting a new standard in artistry and hygiene.
